The Secret World’s First Developer Diary

The life of a Templar – ain’t it grand? With extensive resources and support, the Templars have battled evil for centuries, and are likely the least secret of the secret societies. With the ability to operate more openly and freely, the Templars (not to be confused with the Knights Templar)  have maintained their influence and power into the 21st century. Of course, life is much simpler when operating under the guise of religious zeal and fervor.

The Templars base their operations in London, which also plays as The Secret World’s main player hub. Having such commotion and commerce nearby is likely both a blessing and a curse – for obvious reasons. Nevertheless, the story behind the Templars’ existence is well-rooted in the culture of the city, as well as the lore of the game. The first Developer Diary to come from Funcom’s The Secret World explores the starter experience as a fledgling Templar, from the discovery of your supernatural “gift”, to your induction into the faction itself. As you make your way through London, you will be summoned to the Templar headquarters, where you meet your superior, who reminds you,

“We are at war. Might will make right, and it will fall upon us to judge the correct application of might. It falls upon you, as a soldier of the Templars.”

Templar

After some shots of concept art, Martin Bruusgaard, a Lead Designer working on The Secret World, explains the introduction of the combat system. The video gives a clearer description (along with some much needed footage) of the combat system, but we know that players will not choose a predefined “class”, but rather a set of skills that will serve as a character build. These skills are all interchangeable, but we are not yet sure if players can switch skills at will, or if they must be present at certain trainers and/or locations. No more than seven active and seven passive skills can be in a player’s arsenal at any given time, and we can be sure to see some interesting combinations of complementing skills and abilities.

In the starter experience, players will get a rare glimpse into their future, where they will be pitted against demons and constructs that supposedly endanger their future selves. It’s a unique and original way to introduce game mechanics, and a decently spooky one, as well. Look out for some interesting tidbits from Ragnar Tørnquist in the video, as well.

Dragonica US will be undergoing some major changes. Dragonica will be transferred to WarpPortal. WarpPortal offers many F2P games, including: Ragnarok Online, ROSE Online and Requiem: Memento Mori and will be proud to add Dragonica to it’s roster. The good news is that all account information will be transferred over to this new service, meaning no starting over and you can get straight back into the game. However if you don’t wish to use this service, your account will be permanently deleted.

This change will only effect the US version due to different management. European players won’t need to worry about the change. Keep up to date with the transfer here.

Everquest House of Thule Expansion

In the last Las Vegas Fan Faire event, SOE announced the 17th expansion for Everquest. The legend of the game that changed massive multiplayer online gaming forever, continues with EverQuest: House of Thule, set to launch next October 12. Let’s see some of the new features we’ll have in the new HOT expansion.

At last!! HOT brings Player Housing with it!! After all these years, this was one of the features EQ fans were asking for over and over. Housing systems are one of the most immersive things in MMOs,  you get the feeling of belonging to the world you’re playing in, while supporting the social part of the game heavily. In HOT you’re going to get two housing plots at launch. Those plots can be in several neighborhoods and can hold a house each. You’ll be able to buy different sized houses for those plots. This way, you’re even able to create a guild neighborhood with all your guildies placing their houses together… cool thing!

A new Trophy System is being implemented, letting you show your acomplishments through it. You can display your trophies and gain some benefits after you leave the safety of your home and start adventuring. You don’t want to stay away from battle forever, do you?

More AAs. Yes, you can customize your skills even more with over 800 new ones. You had thousands to make your character a powerful being, now you’re gonna be a demigod. Remember: grinding is good.

More levels. So you think you’re over with leveling? Nope. HOT increases level cap to 90, 5 more levels to fight for, bringing new tiers of gear and leting your character be distinguished from the rest.

More inventory space. Always good to have an extra when you need to store all those heavy bags, chests, backpacks and so on, full of so many things you don’t even remember what they are for. Cool feature, we all need a lot of storage space in any MMO.

In addition to all this, you’ll have 450+ new spells, 120+ new quests, 18 new raids areas, 13 new zones, 17 missions, lots of new housing items and more. So let’s say ye olde EQ is healthy, strong, alive and kicking. Grats to all its fans, EQ is about to ding! once more.

Free to Play Market to Reach $2 Billion

A new report by the research firm DFC Intelligence forecasts that the English language free to play market will grow from about $250 million a year today to over $2 billion by 2015. That’s an eightfold increase in five years. It’s worth mentioning that these figures only pertain to client-based free to play games. Throw in the browser based market and $2 billion looks like a low estimate!

DDO – Free and Making Money

The study notes that despite the rapid growth rate for free to play games in the US, many Korean companies had actually expected even faster rates. But now that knowledge of the industry, and the high quality games it can produce is better understand, growth is expected to ramp up. The report states that there will be a combined total of 128 million English language registered users in the free to play space. I don’t know if that counts overlap between publishers, or if ‘English based’ means USA or the entire English speaking world.

Fiesta Online – Many free to play games are Korean

One interesting tidbit in the study is a remark concerning download speeds in the US compared to countries with much more developed free to play markets. Countries like South Korea, Sweden, Japan, and Romania enjoy much faster download speeds than users elsewhere which makes it easier for gamers in those countries to download game clients with large file sizes.

What does this mean for gamers? It means we’ll be getting a lot more free to play titles in more and more genres.

DFC Intelligence Forecasts English Language Free-to-Play Games to Reach $2 Billion

A new report from DFC Intelligence forecasts that the market for English language client-based free-to-play (F2P) games on the PC is expected to grow from about $250 million in 2009 to $2 billion by 2015. This growth is largely due to widespread adoption of high-speed Internet connections combined with a growing willingness of consumers to buy digital content and improved payment options such as prepaid retail cards.

The F2P market has been firmly established in Asia for many years. According to DFC analyst Insun Yoon, “For many Korean companies the market in North America has not taken off nearly as fast as they expected. Much of this can be attributed to the immature infrastructure and a lack of established payment and service mechanisms. The good news is that this is starting to change and consumers are starting to realize that the game play of top high-end F2P games can be quite sophisticated.”

Most F2P games operate under a model where users can download and play a game for free and have the option to buy virtual goods or upgrade to a subscription package that opens additional play content. “F2P games can have multiple payment options and most successful games look to bundle products in creative packages such as the ability to buy a monthly or annual subscription that include a set amount of virtual currency. Creativity in marketing, packaging and distribution are the keys to generating increased revenue,” said David Cole, an analyst at DFC.

By the end of 2010, it is expected that English language client based F2P games will have a combined total of 128 million registered users. While this is not as high as many browser based games and games on social networks, F2Ps have fairly high conversion rates. “Registered user numbers are a fairly meaningless metric in this market. Once a consumer is able to get a game downloaded and running conversion rates for high-end F2P games tend to be fairly high,” says Yoon.

One major problem is that in North America and Europe it is still difficult for consumers to successfully install a large client. In conjunction with Pando Networks, a game delivery services company, DFC is providing a separate report on Online Game Delivery. This report shows that consumers in South Korea, Romania, Japan and Sweden have significantly higher download speeds than the rest of the world. According to the Pando report, eight of the fastest 12 cities in the world are located in Korea.

The new report entitled The Market for English Language Client-Based Free-to-Play PC Games has complete five-year forecasts, business model scenarios and detailed company profiles. DFC Intelligence also has several reports available surveying consumer attitudes on F2P and digital content in general. Subscribers to DFC’s research package services can get access to additional reports, consumer surveys, historical data, regular updates, more detailed breakouts by country and genre and the ability to search the DFC database and download data to Excel spreadsheets.
